In the letter Session demands Metro Police prove they are in compliance or risk losing federal money. Lombardo has until June 30, 2017 to comply or lose over $6 million in federal grant money according to Session’s letter. Eight jurisdictions had been identified in a 2016 inspector general report as “may violate federal law.” And Metro Police was cited twice this year in ICE Detainer reports for refusing to turn over criminal illegal aliens to ICE in violation of federal law. President Trump signed an executive order in January directing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, to issue weekly ICE reports showing the public which police departments are doing the worst job of turning over criminal illegal aliens with detainer holds. Clark County, Las Vegas Metro Police had the worst record in the country according to the report. Sheriff Lombardo went back to Washington D.C. three weeks ago to meet with Attorney General Sessions to dispute the way ICE calculates detainer holds because he’s has been getting killed in the press. And with Lombardo facing the voters next year he is desperately trying to turn around his image. So this latest letter is just more salt in Lombardo’s self inflicted-wound.
